BASIC LANDSCAPE AND GARDEN DESIGN If you are
fortunate enough to own a hill do not place
the house on the very top, in the best
manner of America of the nineteenth century,
but just below the top, in the English
way. Then you get all the view and at the
same time some shelter from storms and
wind. Accessibility from the street has
to be considered. The driveway must reach
the house, or at least the garage, without
too steep grades, too many turns, or expensive
grading operations and retaining walls.
And it should be direct, coming in toward
the house on a side away from the lawns
and gardens.
Winding drives went out with
the bustle. The style of the house also
influences its location. Colonial and
Georgian houses demand a rather broad,
flat site. English and Norman houses look
well on a hillside, but should have some
level ground around them. Italian and Spanish
houses can cling quite precariously to
a hillside, and still look at home. Modernistic
houses seem to need space, space, and then
