Garden Planning
Summary
SUMMARY Such a plan is typical in its fundamental
arrangement of the small American suburban
or country home of one or two acres. Most
are less elaborate; all, if they would
be successful, embody the same fundamental
divisions of space and possess more or
less the same features. Those who realize
that careful planning can make any country
or suburban home more pleasant and satisfaction
giving will see just what steps are to be gone
through to achieve this happy result. The
site will be carefully selected so that
it has natural possibilities, is large
enough, has the proper exposure, and is
in the right neighborhood.
The house will
be located where it is accessible, where
it best fits into the topography, where
the correct exposures can be given the
different rooms, where the proper relation
with the various parts of the grounds may
be easily established. The grounds, in
turn, will be subdivided according to the
use to which they are to be put: into service
area, public area, gardens, private lawn;
each part will receive its due attention
as to detailed planting and construction.
Terraces, gardens, and lawns have
here been added to the development, which
might easily stop at this point. last basic garden
