DRAINAGE AND GUTTERS

DRAINAGE AND GUTTERS The matter of road drainage is a most important one, and yet it is often slighted or overlooked. In heavy clay types of gutter construction and penetration macadam construction, soils underdrainage is provided by laying, under the center of the road, a line of 4-inch agricultural tile. Gutters for surface drainage, together with the necessary catch basins, are provided where there is any considerable slope. These gutters may be cobbles, granite or Belgian block, brick, concrete, or grass, depending on grades and the amount of water to be taken care of. Of all these the grass gutter is the best looking, though somewhat difficult to maintain. It has the great advantage of lessening the apparent width of the road, for it appears to be a part of the adjoining lawn. With the concrete or granite block gutter a low curbing can be used, which prevents cars from running off and keeps the road material off the lawn, but such a curb also contributes to the drive a hardness of outline that is often undesirable. on to walks and paths...
