GRASS FOR SPECIAL CONDITIONS
GRASS FOR SPECIAL CONDITIONS Besides the usual
lawn grasses and pasture grasses there are others
which fill certain special needs. In the South
Centipede grass stolons are used to make a satisfactory
lawn. These consist of cuttings 14 to 22 inches
long which are sowed in 8-inch drills. Thirty-five
thousand cuttings are required for an acre of
lawn. For hot summer conditions as well as dryness
and poor soil Chewings Fescue and Creeping Fescue
are useful. In areas of the Middle West, where
the soil is not acid, Kentucky Blue and Canada
Blue grass are most suitable. For moist, shady
places various leaved Fescue is good; for light,
dry soils, and for cracks in flagstone walks
and terraces, Sheep's Fescue is useful. Bermuda
grass is popular in the South, and if followed
by Italian Rye grass a year-round turf can be
maintained.
