SEEDING TIME
SEEDING TIME The best time for seeding a lawn
is between August 15 and September 25
in the Northern states. At this time grass
germinates quickly and easily, there is
usually enough rain, and weed seeds do
not seem to grow so quickly. By the time
cold weather sets in the grass will be
strong enough to winter well. Now it often
happens that one is not ready to seed in
the fall. The house may not be finished
until so late that the grading cannot be
done in time. In this case it is wise to
do the rough grading in the late fall and
wait until spring to put on the topsoil
and seed the lawn.
Next to early fall,
March and early April are the best times
in which to sow grass seed. If it is impossible
to do it at either of these desirable periods,
the best thing is to let the rough grading
stand until fall, its bareness covered
with a catch crop of Rye or Buckwheat which
can be turned under when about a foot° high,
making "green
manure." This is excellent for the soil,
and discourages weeds. Both these crops
will grow on the average subsoil, making
it that much richer when they are turned
in. It is better not to put on the topsoil
before sowing the cover crop because under
these conditions the topsoil and fertilizer
which have been carefully put on may be
turned under too deeply when the ground
is replowed. learn about quantites...
