Water Features
A water feature is a crucial, central element to any garden plan. Water is life, and a fountain, pond, or dramatic water feature is essential. Not only does a water fountain help attract birds and beneficial wildlife, it creates a pleasant sound that adds a backdrop to the garden.
LANDSCAPE DESIGN WITH FOUNTAINS AND PONDS
Essentially, your fountain, pond, or water feature choice will come down to the appearance or "look" you find appealing, and the functional aspects. This includes the electricity for the pump, the availability of water, and the suitability of the material for the atmospheric conditions. Rain, sun, snow, freezing temperatures can all have negative effects on the various materials fountains and water features are made from.
PONDSAlmost all gardens can be improved by the addition of a
pond, water feature, or garden fountain. The nondescript garden that looked so well on
paper but did not turn out as well as expected simply begs for a shapeless sort of pond
to put it right.

Water Gardens
Water Gardens and Water Gardening are vast subjects. Essentially, they are gardens where the primary medium is water, and not soil. Both concern themselves with a wide variety of plant material, and the water garden also can have various small mammals and fish. See Pond Life for more details. For more info on Water Gardening.
Fountains
Here is where you have an immense ability to control the planning of your garden. The sheer breadth and depth in the variety of fountains, garden fountains, wall fountains, and outdoor fountains is staggering. Outdoor fountains can be broken down into three main categories:
Garden Fountains - includes concrete, cast stone, large and small water features.
Wall Fountains - perfect for small yards, and when space is a concern.
Waterfalls- an attempt to simulate nature, versus a man made water feature.
If water is a problem, consider the installation of garden statuary, or garden bird baths.
